The God of Glory Thundereth

LightningGive unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire.
The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.
The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever.
The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29

The psalmist in Psalm 29 uses the electrical storm to describe God’s awesome power, glory and majesty, but last night we saw and heard God’s awesome power, glory and majesty first hand! We had a power blackout – it went off at 12:10 a.m., and it didn’t come back on until 2:40p.m – that’s fourteen and a half hours without power, but I praise God and count it all joy.

The electrical storm last night was extremely LOUD – there was the long rolling rumble of thunder, the shaking of the windows and the crrraaack as it thundered overhead. We managed to find the candles, but the matches were absolutely elusive, although we did manage to find a box in the kitchen cupboard, so I lit a candle and went to bed – somehow, everything is right in my world if there is light!. If  it wasn’t so late, I should have probably watched the lightning as well, but I was content to bury my head under the covers, and then the rain started – it absolutely pelted down for about half an hour.

During the daytime I managed to do all of my filing, and the filing cabinet looks much tidier, now. My daughter and I also paid the bills and bought some food when we went to town. Crazy, isn’t it? We have a freezer and a fridge/freezer full of food, and yet we couldn’t open them, as we are never sure how long the power is going to be off for. Most times it is off for over 12 hours and under 18 hours, but nothing defrosts in the deep freeze as long as we don’t open it.

It appears that we are now expecting another severe thunderstorm, as the BOM has issued this warning:

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
South Australia Regional Office

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for DAMAGING WIND, LARGE HAILSTONES and FLASH FLOODING
For people in the Flinders, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and parts
of the Mid North and Northeast Pastoral districts.

Issued at 2:07 pm Tuesday, 6 April 2010.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones,
very heavy rainfall and flash flooding in the warning area during this
afternoon. Locations which may be affected include Renmark, Loxton, Lameroo,
Keith, Leigh Creek and Jamestown. Large hailstones are not expected north of the
Barrier Highway.

My son and husband were going to cut firewood this afternoon, but it appears that God has other ideas! With large hail expected, our car is safely ensconced in the car shed, and I can relax knowing that we are all safe and warm at home.

When I was little I use to hid under the kitchen table as I was so scared of thunder and lightening. But I did have a valid reason – we lived in the Adelaide Hills and lightening in the summer months were known to start fires and I hated them too. I hope my parents got some of your rain. My brother said today that the city received heaps this morning.

It is getting cold where I live and I have my slippers and track pants on to keep warm, soon it will be time to turn on the central heating!!

    Hi Jo,
Hiding under the kitchen table would have been very cold last night!

It is down to 10C at night here, already – we are contemplating central heating for next year. Firewood is getting so difficult to get these days.

    Have a wonderful week,
    Blessings, Jillian ♥

  3. I like to hear thunder storms. It’s good, I think, to be reminded of His power. When I am feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world, I recall how big He is, how powerful He is – particularly if I read Revelation. But somehow, a thunderstorm is such a tangible reminder of how powerless men really are, and how mighty He is.

Of course, I only like them if I am safe at home!

Jillian, your 10C sounds waaaaay too chilly for this little Queenslander!

    Hi Mrs BB,
It’s such a tangible reminder of His great and mighty power, isn’t it? Revelation is such a powerful book of the Bible, isn’t it? My daughter and I are currently reading Ruth and 1 Chronicles (as of tomorrow night), and we are back on track with our Bible reading schedule to read the Bible in a year. :D

I like them if I am safely tucked up in bed, cat curled up at my feet and candle lit. I know, I’m a bit of a wuss. ;)

It does get colder here – much colder (minus eight in the chilly depths of winter), so hence we need the firewood. :)

How cold does it get overnight where you are?

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
    Love, Jillian ♥

Firewood? Cool nights? I feel like I live on another planet… we are now just turning off our air cons. Fans are sufficient and the ocean breeze is refreshing. Jumpers are still packed away where they have been for the last 2 years ;)

I agree with you Mrs BB. Very well said.

I love a good thunderstorm. From the safety of my home too. Rain? Well, we have had 3 weeks of rain, rain and more rain. And a few threatening cyclones brewing. A thunderstorm would certainly break the monotomy.

I too like the reminder. It makes me not feel so alone in the world. We had a thunderstorm last night too and I loved it. I think again today it is supposed to be stormy. Yea!

    blessings,
    tricia

    Hi Amanda,
We burn our way through about twenty tons (yes, twenty!) of firewood each winter, and the cold weather here goes from end March (usually) until the end of November. We are extremely blessed this year, as we haven’t lit the fire, yet! As for jumpers – this year I have enough to triple layer and keep warm – my friend, Janice, gave me a heap of them at the end of winter last year, as it was so cold here, and I froze.

Three weeks of rain – that would be heavenly. :D

I have only ever been through one cyclone, and that was enough.

    Have a wonderful week,
    Love and blessings,
    Jillian ♥

    Hi Tricia,
God’s power is absolutely amazing, isn’t it?

Today is overcast, and we are expecting more storms – I love winter! :D

    Have a wonderful week,
    Blessings, Jillian ♥

Once winter hits we turn on our central heating and use it all the way through to October (I live in a cold part of Australia). It is wonderful getting up to a warm house. Ours is gas which I think is cheaper than wood. We run ours through the night – at around 14C and 23C in the evenings.

I haven’t turned ours on yet (we are down to 8-10 at night at the moment), but I have got out the socks and cardigans to wear in the evenings and have a couple of throws near my lounge to put across my legs!!!

Wood fires produces a lot of smoke and on some mornings all you can see across the suburbs is smoke.

    Blessings

    Hi Jo,
We have a problem, as I have an allergy to gas, so our heating would have to be electric. At the moment we are thinking about reverse cycle ducted air conditioning, as my husband is finding cutting wood very difficult.

We have been using the bar radiator at night, as we are already in the cold season, then.

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
    Love Jillian ♥
