All on Her Own

Today my daughter has had a baking spree, baking two Apple Cakes, two Carrot Cakes but best of all, two Boiled Chocolate Cakes. Now this is a major achievement, as she has never followed this recipe before, and she did it all on her own. The results – well, I think that they speak for themselves!

Chocolate Cakes

My daughter loves baking, and considering she hadn’t tackled this recipe before, I think that she has done an excellent job. After she had finished the Chocolate Cakes, she also made Sago for dessert – another first for her. I love the freedom of homeschooling, and that my daughter loves baking. ♥

Ganeida recently posted about a Home Economics course that Ditz was undertaking, and Ditz’s culinary skills are excellent, judging by the latest round of cooking, so we have just emailed the company to find out the cost of posting the curriculum to Australia. My daughter is very keen to start this course, and it sounds as if it is just what we are looking for. What about your daughters – do they like testing out their culinary expertise, or do you do all of the cooking in your home?

lol, I’m glad that post was helpful to someone. Your daughter is growing up too. I think she has done a brilliant job with those cakes. We may come a cropper when we tackle the sewing but we’ll see. I suspect Ditz is visually better with patterning than I am so may manage the bits I can’t. I can’t say Ditz always likes to cook but she sure likes to eat! ☺ And eat well. She has been making us custard to pour over our fruit salad in the mornings ~ & very yummy it is too. I really hate to cook so it is a survival skill in our house ~ for the days the old mind really does draw a blank & everyone is left to their own devices. I hope the curriculum blesses you as much as it has blessed us.

    Hi Ganeida,
Oh, I’m glad to hear that you hate cooking, too, for I was beginning to feel rather a freak!

Thank you – my daughter truly loves baking, so I think that she will enjoy the Home Economics curriculum that you posted about – thank you. :D

My son lives to eat, especially when he’s working outside. My husband said that it would be cheaper to pay someone to do the work! :)

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
    Love, Jillian ♥

Jillian, those cakes do look delicious!

I loved the year we homeschooled Lauren. She was 14 and at the perfect age to start cooking meals. Lauren did heaps of cooking that year. Not so much baking, but meals. Reason being, I am not one who is a natural ‘baker’ lol.

Even to this day, she helps alot in the kitchen. I love it when I can leave her in charge of things, when I have to duck out for a while. I am sure her future husband, and that of your daughter’s, will thank us one day :D

My daughters are too young yet but I hope to be able to teach them how to cook from scratch. I let my boys loose in the kitchen and they make pretty good cakes but haven’t really taught them meals yet. I will be doing that as time permitts. For now it’s just me doing the cooking for the eight of us but can’t wait to share the job around!

Good job on the cakes. My girls love to be in the kitchen too. Although not for clean up time!

  6. It sounds like you will be well stocked for a while with goodies :)

My girls like to cook, but we don’t bake sweets too often, because *I* eat them!! So… if we do bake sweet things, I tend to do it (or allow the girls to) when we are going somewhere and can give most of it away. Otherwise, it’s snack time for the mummy… waaaayyyy too often! :P

But today we are having home baked bread with home made butter, compliments of my eldest daughter. We are not one of those homestead-y, do it all yourself types, but do like to play occasionally.

Enjoy those deliciously yummy looking cakes …. :)

    Hi Amanda,
The Chocolate Cakes (well, one of them) is delicious, but we have frozen the majority of the cakes. :)

I don’t like baking much either, and I think that this stems from the fact that my mum didn’t show me how to bake, and therefore nearly every time I baked, it was a failure. :(

We are looking at a curriculum through Christian Light Publications for home economics.

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
    Love, Jillian ♥

    Hi Kathy,
It’s so important to teach children how to cook. My mum didn’t, so that every time I tried, it was a recipe for disaster, and almost invariably failed. That is why I teach our children to cook – not just cakes, but meals, too.

The home ec curriculum that we are looking at also shows how to prepare three course meals – something that even I would struggle with!

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
    Love, Jillian ♥

    Hi Tricia,
    Thank you.
We have a rule in our home, and that is:

If you want to cook, you need to be prepared to clean up afterwards. :)

    Have a wonderful week,
    Blessings,
    Jillian ♥

    Hi Mrs BB,
Yes, we have stocked the freezer with our cakes. :)

Our children – in particular my son – eat the cakes really quickly, so if you want a piece of cake in our home, you’d better be quick! Teenage boys have such BIG appetites! :)

I love home-baked bread, and home-made butter is delicious – so much different to the store bought stuff.
    Have a wonderful week,
    Blessings,
    Jillian ♥

  11. It’s such a huge blessing when the kids learn how to cook. It will also be such a huge help later in life.

  12. Jillian says:

    Hi Heather,
It certainly is – she is already a better cook than I am. :)

    Love and blessings,
    Jillian ♥

I too am interested in Ganeida’s Home Ec course. Do let me know what you think of it and whether you decide to purchase!!

Jemimah does a subject we call ‘kitchen garden’ weekly. It is based on the schools programme run by Stephanie Alexander and involves sowing, harvesting, preparing and eating food from our garden. We love it!! Mind you, she is only 8, so I’ve still got goodies such as your two produce to come!!

    Those cakes look delicious…were they?

  14. Jillian says:

    Hi Jeanne,
We have decided to purchase the Home Econoics course, and it was only $44.64 – I figured that I didn’t have much to lose. :)

At the moment, the sparrows are the only ones eating from our garden – we were planning on closing the vege patch in, but it will now have to wait – all in God’s time.

There are still three cakes in the freezer, but the other three were delicious. :D

    Have a wonderful Easter,
    Blessings, Jillian ♥
