Rosetta Stone German – Our Own Style

Now, what would the most well-behaved child do in a Rosetta Stone German lesson? Why, if you are my son, you would be making a rose out of Blu-Tack.

We visited with friends recently, and their son showed us how to make them, and it appears that my son was listening and watching intently. He has placed it onto my monitor so that when I sit at my computer, it reminds me of him.

Now this brings me to my point, when we are socialising, we never know how much our children are absorbing. It’s only at a later point in time that we actually realise how much they actually do take in.

Then, when we were downsizing it for the internet, before uploading, he showed me that he also knows how to work out ratios, but we haven’t done that, yet – it is in our next PACE for algebra. It just goes to show that our children will learn what they need to know when they need to know it, and that is what homeschooling is all about.

I’m not sure that I would classify this as LOTE – hmmm, what would you classify it as – design and technology maybe, science (nature studies) or something else???

What do we study for LOTE?

When we were looking for a language programme, we started using Prima Latina, but we found it difficult to understand and to remember.

After this, we began looking around for something that would bring the language to life, and after much prayer and internet searching, we found Rosetta Stone and ordered a demonstration disc. Rosetta Stone covers many different languages, which are:

  1. Arabic
  2. Chinese
  3. Dutch
  4. English
  5. Farsi
  6. French
  7. German
  8. Greek
  9. Hebrew
  10. Hindi
  11. Indonesian
  12. Italian
  13. Japanese
  14. Korean
  15. Latin
  16. Pashto
  17. Polish
  18. Portuguese
  19. Russian
  20. Spanish
  21. Swahili
  22. Swedish
  23. Thai
  24. Turkish
  25. Vietnamese
  26. Welsh

We played around with the demo CD, having a look at the different languages, and eventually decided on German, so the next step was to order it, and the best price that we could find was from Twin Suns Online – this also included a FREE headset.

We have been using this curriculum for about two years now, and it is great – the test results reflect this, and it is easy to understand and fun to use. The scope and sequence listed in the curriculum is different to the way that we have been studying, as there aren’t enough hours in our day to fit anything more into it, so our German lessons are half an hour twice a week.

Rosetta Stone uses images and text to teach the language, and comes complete with voice recognition software so that you can practise your pronunciation, with the aid of a native speaker.

German is an official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. German is spoken in many European countries as a second language and is the third most taught and translated language in the world.
